9 Ways To Speed Up Your Computer

Over time your computer begins to lose speed, it is not an “if” situation, it is a “when”.  One of the most common complaints that PC users have is that their system seems to be slowing down over time of regular use.

There are several things you can do to help speed up your computer and below 9 things are listed that you can do on your own, without the help of a professional technician.

  1. Ensure Your Hardware Is Sufficient: If you do not have enough memory installed or a large enough hard drive to accommodate your programs and operating system that is installed you will notice severely slowing speeds.

  1. Clean Up Your Desktop: All of those files on your desktop can be using memory that is needed for a faster PC, so clean up that desktop and get some speed back.

  1. Scan For System Errors: Run your systems file and error checking program to ensure that there are no corrupt or misconfiguration files on your computer.

  1. Scan For Viruses, Ad-ware or Spyware: Anytime your PC is infected with a virus, Trojan, ad-ware or spyware program it will become bogged down and even cause lockups. Be sure you have an antivirus program installed and update it regularly.

  1. Uninstall Any Unused Programs: All of those programs that have accumulated on your PC that you are not using can cause your system to slow down. Remove any programs that you do not need and free up that space as well as free up other resources to create more speed.

  1. Adjust Visual Effects: If you are working with a lower amount of memory than you need you can often change display settings and visual effects to help free up some valuable resources on your PC and speed it up.

  1. Remove Programs From Start Up: When you boot your PC up, all of those programs that are set to automatically load into your start-up bar will use resources and cause your system to slow down. Remove any or all of the programs that are set to automatically start when Windows is booted, with the exception of the antivirus program.

  1. Defrag Your Hard Drive: Run a defrag on your hard drive at least twice a month in order to ensure your systems hard drive is running at optimal speed.

  1. Reinstall The Operating System: Running a clean install of the operating system will help to free up all of the space that you were using and correct any system errors that you may have been experiencing.
