What Exactly is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing delivers computing as a service, instead of a product. This basically means that it is sharing resources, information and software to other computers and devices over a network. The cloud computing infrastructure allows data, information and other resources to be shared with the other computers and devices without providing any information about what other information is stored on the infrastructure.

Users will access their cloud based applications by using a web browser or even a desktop or mobile application to gain access to information that is stored at the remote location of the server. Cloud computing offers a more reliable and effective method of sharing information and resources and creates a safer and more secure method for businesses to store their important information. The reliability comes from the fact that the information is stored in one remote location and there is no need for heavy software to be installed on each system, so the information is always obtainable and accessible.

This method of computing allows businesses to manage their applications more effectively, get them up and running much quicker and allows for less maintenance. IT resources can be altered, managed and adjusted quickly with little unpredictability.

Cloud computing offers services from three fundamental models; (IaaS) Infrastructure as a Service, (PaaS) platform as a service and (SaaS) software as a service and can be customized to fit any business structures needs.

Let’s consider this, if you were an executive in a large corporation and had responsibilities that included ensuring all the employees were equipped with the right equipment such as hardware and software they needed to effectively do their jobs you would also be responsible for purchasing individual software licenses and agreements for each of those employees systems. Purchasing software licenses can be costly and with every new hire a new software and license would have to be purchased, it could become extremely stressful as well as expensive.

Cloud computing offers a simple solution to the cost as well as the effectiveness of the software for the employees. By loading only one application instead of one to each machine you can offer the employees the ability to access all the information they need by logging into a web based service. This web based service would host all of the applications and programs that the employee would need to do their job and in turn could save the businesses thousands upon thousands of dollars.

Cloud computing allows for a major workload shift so that local computers would no longer be responsible for all of the applications that are used. The network that is making up the cloud computing system would be the main responsible parties for running the applications and ensuring that everything runs smooth for the users on the network.

There are many ways you may have already experienced cloud computing. If you use services such as Gmail or Hotmail for a free email account then you have already had some experience using cloud computing.
