Firewalls, Do We Really Need Them?

Firewall usage reduces the risk of an attack.

Computer firewalls are put in place to protect our information, our networks and our systems from any intrusions or attacks. However, even with them installed we are still at risk. We have lowered the risk by installing a firewall but the risk still exists.

There are many reasons why we need computer firewalls up and running on our systems at all times. Below is some information and pointers about why a firewall should be installed, what it can do to help protect you and why we need them.

Lost or Manipulated Data:  Your business computer handles tons of data each day and that data is used to help run your company, stay in touch with customers, create marketing campaigns, keep track of ordering, holds your shipping information and even stores your financial records. Think of the devastation it could have on your company to one day turn your system on to find that all of your data is lost or has been altered. A firewall will help to protect your data from being stolen, deleted or manipulated by any outside intruders.

Privacy And Confidentiality: Your business computer holds secrets to your success, private information about yours and your customers financial records. Without a firewall in place you are leaving all that information open and available to an attacker or intruder. If you do not want your customer list stolen, your trade secrets or any financial information leaking out into places it does not belong, install a firewall!

Network Hijacking: Having an intruder hijack your network for personal use can be frustrating, but when the real frustration begins is when someone hijacks your network for malicious behavior or to do something unlawful. When they authorities target the location from which the activity took place or originated from you can expect a knock at your door. These types of activities can bring with it a ton of bad press.  Terrorists activities often begin online, over a hijacked network, so be sure to protect yours and secure it with the help of a firewall.

Down Time: Many times intruders are out to cause you to lose time and of course money, it may be in fun or to gain attention or could be to retaliate against you or your company in some way. Either way when these DOS (denial of Service) attacks occur, it can freeze up your entire system or lock you out of all the important areas you need in order to operate.

Any of these intrusions can cause you not only frustration, loss of time, loss of money but also loss of a good reputation. If your customers secrets are out, their financial or personal information they are not going to really care that you were a victim in the attack as well, what they will concern themselves with is that you allowed it to happen. Use computer firewalls to protect yourself, your company and of course your customers by installing a firewall and ensuring it is up to date, always running and that the settings are tight enough that no one can squeak through to cause your business any harm.
