Is There Any Chance at Success in the Computer Repair Business, or is the Market Flooded?

There’s no doubt that over the years computer repair has become a lucrative field for those with the no-how and ambition to compete in the field. But many people now are wondering if the market has become too saturated to successfully break into. There’s no denying that the computer repair business is a necessary and demanding field. However, other businesses, such as restaurants, survive and actually thrive under such harsh competition.

Some may think that the computer repair industry is a dying breed, as users become more and more capable of servicing their own machines, thanks to a plethora of free online tutorials and increasingly easier to service machines. Also, with the decline in computer prices, it is oftentimes easier and cheaper for users to simply purchase new machines when technical problems arise.

So, where does this leave computer repair techs? An increasing number of businesses and schools are contracting smaller computer repair businesses to address issues as they arise, since it is cheaper than hiring full-time IT staff.  With spending cuts in the tough economy, more and more businesses and low-budget government offices are relying on computer repairs to nurse older systems rather than investing in all new ones.

Of course, there will always be problems which users encounter that cannot be solved by simply purchasing new machines. These types of problems, such as information retrieval from virus-riddled registries, require the help of an expert.

In addition to computer repair, many computer techs are branching out into offering repair services for similar machines, such as game systems, which have all the same core components as computers, have issues more often, require many of the same parts to fix, and are much more costly to replace.

Computer repair businesses that offer such services at reasonable prices often have a competitive edge over competition that focuses solely on computers. Since game systems require servicing more often, there is a larger audience and more opportunity to gain positive referrals. Additionally, offering services such as free diagnostics and scans, free spec reviews and estimates for upgrading older machines, and low-cost classes to teach users how to effectively care for and maintain their computers, can be an excellent way to generate business.

Many repair companies also offer custom-built machines, which can be a major draw to consumers who know exactly what they want out of their machines but don’t have the time or resources to build or research on their own. The possibilities for finding a unique service to offer to make your computer repair business stand above the rest are nearly endless.

Success in the computer service field simply requires the ability and ambition to seek out that something special and willingness to put in the effort to build a good reputation within the community. Maintaining lasting relationships with customers and offering warranties or guaranteeing the work you’ve done are an excellent practice. While the market is indeed competitive, with the proper drive and ambition, there is still enough room in the industry for those unafraid to try and advance into the new age.
