Why It Is Not Safe To Use Facebook To Log Into Websites

It happens to all of us at some point in time. You want to sign on to a website but you simply do not feel like going through the hassle of creating yet another log in name or Button-login-facebookpassword. You know the drill. This just creates yet another password to add to the list. You look and you see the option to “Log In Using Face Book”. The convenience looks so tempting. In just a couple of clicks you will be on your way with out having to remember another sign-on profile. This is where I ask you to hold on and think again about what you are doing.

When you sign into a website with Facebook, you are giving that site permissions to “post on your behalf” among others. For many legitimate websites, this often will not be a problem. For example, I have used a Facebook login for years to play a few of my favorite online games such as Candy Crush with no undesirable consequences. If you happen to do this with a bogus website or one that totally disregards your privacy, you might be in for more then you bargained for.

If you suddenly start to see strange posts or your Facebook friends start to get e-mails or posts that you are not initiating, there is a good chance that your account has been compromised. You might not even realize it yourself. It will likely be one or more of your friends on Facebook that will alert you to the problem. Once a potential problem is encountered, it is imperative to change your password immediately. In addition, review all your installed apps and discard any that you are not using or might not need. Keep only the ones that are absolutely necessary.

In addition to logging into unknown locations, some links that are included in posts can also be harmful to click on. Most of these links will usually relate to subjects such as celebrities or almost nude pictures. In many cases these links will be infected so it is a good idea to stay away from them. If you want information on a celebrity, go to a site such as TMZ or other well-known media outlet for the information.

Besides all the potential security threats, there are also plenty of non-sense posts out there that many folks actually believe are true. One of the biggest ones going around right now is the one about copywriting your pictures and documents on Facebook. This post is a complete scam and you should not share it. Although it does no security harm, it just makes many people believe that they are copywriting their pictures and documents that are on Facebook. This simply is not true. So the next time you see a questionable post on Facebook, head on over to http://www.snopes.com and check to see if that crazy post is actually valid or false before posting it to your wall. A good part of them will not be true at all. You will be doing your friends a great favor.

As you can see, posting on Facebook requires some responsibility of the user. Once something is posted, it cannot ever be completely erased. It will float around in cyber space for an eternity. So please use and post responsibly when logged into Facebook!
