Throughout the course of a day, your computer saves and deletes sometime hundreds or thousands of files. If you use your system all day long, that number could be staggering. 
With all that file activity going on, your hard drive takes a ponding trying to keep all those files organized. Unfortunately when files are deleted and added the files that remain on the drive begin to get scattered all over the place.
