Why embedded PCs are ideal for call centers

Picture a call center. What is the first thing that you think of? Chances are you will conjure up images of multiple computers is use by employees in headsets. And you’d be right.

For those who run these departments, you will be fully aware that multiple computers ultimately mean amplified electricity bills. However, where desktop computers have traditionally been the norm, embedded PCs are starting to become better established.

For an office manager of any nature, it will be a priority to ensure that costs are kept down to maximise revenue, and over recent years, we have also seen a growing emphasis on going green. Consumers are becoming savvier to sustainable measures and want to give their money to those making a visible effort to reduce their carbon footprint. This is where embedded PCs can come in.

Embedded computers are significantly smaller than your traditional computer. They are designed robust and as a result don’t need any moving parts, eliminating any need for  a fan as a result. This is a huge benefit for a few reasons, with the most prevalent being for reducing electricity costs. Not only will each individual computer require less energy to run but with less heat omitted from the machines, there will be less need in the call center for expensive air conditioning to be on. With computers one of the biggest expense of any call center, this can make a huge difference.

In fact, with a call centre of 250 computers working around the clock, it is estimated that almost $30,000 could be saved in direct energy bills alone – and with less electricity used come your green credentials.
Thanks to the compact nature of embedded computers, the environment of a call center can be improved upon. In these environments where numerous adjacent workstations are present, desk space can be transformed from limited or cluttered areas, to a tidy and more efficient workspace.

Although some may show concern for downsizing their machines, this does not necessarily equal a downgrade. We only need to look at smartphones to know that sometimes, good things can come in small packages.

Embedded PCs are built to be powerful and aim to be a long-term addition to the office. Where more traditional computers are built with a shelf-life of only a few years, embedded computers are manufactured to last much longer. In fact, as the components are not at risk of over-heating (hence how they can be fanless) the general wear and tear is reduced in the long-term reducing the strain on IT departments, as well as ensuring that staff remain productive, without any distractions due to repairs or upgrades.

Fully customisable, embedded computers are able to adapt according to changing requirements over the years, making them a long-term solution, and much better value for money from the get-go for office managers.
The fact is, call centres put an enormous amount of importance on technology and as they are often the first port of call for customers to contact a business, it’s vital that their machines are reliable and sustainable. As embedded computers can run 24/7/365 confidently, they are idyllic for high-usage environments, such as these.
