Tips For Keeping Windows 7 Running Smooth

When it comes to keeping your Windows 7 computer running smoothly there are some helpful tips and tricks you can use. We all use our computers on a daily basis and with so much information being transmitted to and from the system it is bound to have issues at some point. Some maintenance techniques can keep it running smooth and they are simple and take only a few moments of your time.

Remove Malware
Spyware will collect your information and can steal your passwords when you enter them into websites you frequent. You are at risk of having your personal or financial information put into the wrong hands if you have spyware on your computer.

Adware will follow your online and offline behavior and report it back to the original creator so that they can sell your information to companies as leads to begin flooding your computer with pop up banners and ads. This can really slow down your system and create lockups and even a corrupt registry.
Viruses are designed to do many things, sometimes they are harmless but other times they can wreak havoc on your system and even cause it to become unusable.

In order to ensure your system remains stable, remove all malware from your system by using an up to date anti-virus program. Keep the anti-virus software running on your system at all times and run scans on a regular basis to protect your system from future attacks.

Free Up Disk Space
The disk cleanup feature included with your Windows operating system allows you to improve your systems performance by removing any unnecessary files that are left on your computer’s hard drive. You can safely delete the files of your choice and if you create a backup before performing the cleanup you will be able to quickly restore the files that you may have deleted that were needed for your system to function properly.

Disk cleanup offers the following options:

  • Removal of temporary internet files
  • Safely remove downloaded programs and files such as Active X controls and Java Applets
  • Cleans up Recycle Bin
  • Deletes options Windows files that are not needed or in use
  • Removes programs no longer in use
  • Removes unused restore points and any shadow copies of the System Restore

Disk Defragmentation
When your hard drive is fragmented it can severely slow down your systems performance. Your response time for opening programs and applications will be affected dramatically as more and more files become fragmented on your hard drive. The hard drive has to work overtime trying to piece everything together when you make a command, so running a disk defragmentation is recommended on a regular basis.

Weekly Disk Defragmentation is recommended in order to keep your system running smoothly. If you have added a large number of files to your computer, if you have less than 15% of total free space or anytime you install new programs or upgrade your Windows operating system you should run a defragmentation of your hard drive.
