There are five core foundations essential for a career in IT.
Solid Mathematical Skills
Mathematical skills begin in elementary school. IT involves complex quantitative reasoning skills to complete a task or solve a problem. Thus, a prospective IT professional must have strong quantitative skills. Additionally, other important skills include data analysis and interpretation. Having strong grades in mathematical courses are a plus for any IT job.
On the side, grades in non-mathematical classes should be strong too including English because technical writing is important to produce proposals and reports for an IT career at meetings and industry conferences. Foreign languages help too because international collaborations can occur in IT.
Computer Programming and Engineering
IT can involve hardware or software, but the latter has more career opportunities. The core knowledge bank of an IT professional is computer programming and engineering. Therefore, a bachelor’s degree in computer science or information science is the educational foundation for an IT job. Thus, going to college is a must for an IT career. Later on, graduate degrees will be important for career advancement.
Some companies offer entry-level training in partnership with vocational schools. However, higher paying jobs require a bachelor’s degree, especially at well-known companies.
Project Management
Many IT jobs revolve around projects involving multiple tasks and priorities. Project management skills should be learned through laboratory classes in college during group projects. Such skills result in improved organizational and multitasking abilities.
Internships
Education is important for IT jobs. However, work experience is more important to start a career in IT. While in college, using summer breaks to intern at a company is a great way to start a career in IT. Internships provide experience in the field and an introduction to a variety of IT job types. Some companies offer positions to strong performing interns. Not to mention, internships open the opportunity for networking.
Networking
Constant networking leads to career advancement in IT. Networking can be done at work and conferences or through family and friends.
