Can my computer screen cause damage to my eyes?

Often you will hear someone complain of eye soreness or dry eyes possibly a sore neck and sometimes even a headache after sitting in front of a computer screen for more than Computer-Eyethree hours at a time. People are often led to believe that continuously looking at a computer screen will cause permanent eye damage.

The truth of the matter is that extensive time spent looking at a computer screen can cause Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) but not to worry, this condition is not permanent and with a few tweaks can be corrected. This condition is not caused by the screen itself but rather by the conditions surrounding the screen and your work environment.

First here are a few of the most common symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome

*             Blurred vision with difficulty focusing

*             Burning or dry eyes

*             Eye pressure and strain

*             Neck pain

*             Headaches

These symptoms may result from poor office lighting or a glare from an overhead office light. Sitting too closely to the computer screen itself or poor body mechanics while at the computer..

Luckily we have compiled a few ways for you to create a better working environment to hopefully stop these pesky issues and get you back on track.

*             Get your eyes checked by a professional, you may need glasses just for the computer or you may be using an outdated prescription.

*             Ask your eye Dr If they provide the special anti glare coating that goes onto your lenses.

*             Make sure you rest your eyes often, by looking at an object that is farther away than your computer screen. It may even help to get up every so often and walk around to get out of the environment you are used to working in.

*             Create good lighting in your office, try to prevent glare on your computer monitor. If you cannot move the lighting around, move your computer monitor until it feels comfortable for you.

*             Make sure to clean your computer screen regularly; smudges or a film could cause your eyes to strain to see your computer clearer.

When you go in to see your eye Dr. sometimes he might recommend therapy that you can do at home or in their office that may be able to help alleviate some of your symptoms as well.

Hopefully by implementing some of the above tweaks into your office or daily computer use your eye pain and neck pain will clear up and you will be able to be productive and pain free again.
