Security experts recommend that you use a different password for each website that is both difficult to guess and is made up of a combination of both characters and numbers. But how do you remember all of these different passwords without writing them down, which is also advised against? In this brief guide we will explore three different solutions of managing your passwords.

Microsoft Office

You may not have thought about this obvious solution but Microsoft Office can also be used as a password manager. But how can you use a word processor or spread sheet solution safely? You could create a new document table in Word or Excel and then password protect this document using Microsoft’s built-in password protection tool. To do this in Microsoft Office 2007 onwards simply click File > Save As > Tools > General Options and then enter your password. Now you only have to remember one password to open the document and view the rest of your usernames and passwords that can be updated regularly. However, remember that while Microsoft Office is a more secure way to store your passwords then writing them down, it does not offer 100% guaranteed protection and other dedicated password managers may offer higher encryption methods. Also remember that if using Microsoft Office to be your password manager, never email your password to anyone or call it an easy to guess name like “Passwords.doc” because this could be targeted by a future computer virus.

We hope that this guide has helped you understand the importance of safe password management and explore some of the options available.
