Windows Registry Fixing Missing DLL Errors

First Steps To Fixing Missing DLL Errors

Causes of Missing DLL Errors

Missing DLL errors usually occur when one of the following conditions is true:

  • A recently installed application has deleted a shared DLL used by other applications installed on your system.
  • A recently installed application has overwritten an existing DLL file with an outdated or incompatible DLL file.
  • A faulty installation has corrupted one or more DLL files.
  • A malicious program has damaged or deleted an important DLL file.
  • A malfunctioning hardware, such as a faulty hard disk or faulty memory has corrupted the data on the drive resulting in DLL errors.

 Missing DLL Error Examples

Listed below are a few examples of missing DLL errors:

AdvrCntr.dll cannot be found

This program requires the file advrcntr.dll, which was not found on this system.

The above error occurs when the CD-burning software Nero is incorrectly installed on your system or there is some problem with the AdvrCntr.dll file.

This application has failed to start because MSVCR80.dll was not found. Re-installing the application might fix the problem.

This error occurs when an application is unable to access a DLL file from the WinSxS folder due to a missing manifest file.

Fixing Missing DLL Errors

Depending on the cause of the missing DLL, fixes can be done by using the following methods.

Restore Faulty or Missing DLL Files

If you are lucky, you may be able to fix missing DLL errors by copying the missing DLL from another computer or the Internet and replacing it on your computer. Although this method is quite easy, you must be careful while performing this task because replacing an existing DLL file may also cause other errors on your system.

Therefore, it is better that if an error has occurred soon after you have uninstalled an application, you reinstall this application and then uninstall it again. And this time, when your system prompts you whether or not you want to maintain a certain DLL file on your system, you must choose to retain the file(s). In the same way, if the errors occur soon after you have installed an application, try to check if any update is available for this program. If yes, then updating the application may fix the error. Otherwise, you may be able to fix the error by uninstalling the application.

Perform System Restore

You can also try to fix missing DLL errors by using the System Restore utility to rollback your system to an earlier date. To start system restore open the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools and then select System Restore. In the System Restore dialog box, follow the screen instructions to restore your system to a time before the DLL errors started occurring on your PC.

Verify that All Protected Windows Files are Intact

On Windows XP and Windows 2000 computers, you can run the SFC command to scan protected Windows files and replace incorrect file versions with the correct Microsoft version. To run the SFC command, open the Start menu, select Run, type “sfc /scannow“, and select OK.

Fix Malware Problems

Malware programs such as virus, Trojans, and spyware may also damage or delete dll files and generate missing dll errors. Therefore, it is recommended that you perform a full system virus and spyware scan to ensure that your system is free from malicious infections.

Fix Registry Errors

In order to function, all DLL files need to be registered in the system registry. Therefore, if your registry is full of errors, you may receive several DLL errors. To prevent DLL errors caused by registry problems, it is recommended that you regularly scan and repair registry errors using a reliable registry tool.
