What Do I Do If Windows Update Fails To Work?

You are booting up your computer and you suddenly realize that Windows Update is not downloading or installing the newest updates to your computer. As you may know, update-failed-windowsWindows update is super important at keeping your computer free from Hackers and some Malware exploits. Windows update helps to keep your computer safe and cooperating smoothly. In addition, it helps to keep your system patched from the latest exploits. Updates are usually released on the second Tuesday of every month and this day has been nicknamed “patch Tuesday”.

One of the most problematic updates I have seen are the ones related to .net framework. For some reason, especially in XP, these updates seem to keep duplicating them selves and often times they simply just will not install. I will usually omit these updates and hide them so that do not show again to avoid any problems.

There are occasions when the update service will malfunction and not connect to Microsoft. If you are using Windows XP, the client can be re installed from the Microsoft website. If you are using Vista or Windows 7, usually a system restore back in time will fix the glitch. With the later versions of Windows, re installing the client is not possible since it is integrated into the operating system.

There are times when trying to connect to the Windows update service is caused by Malware. There are times when certain virus infections, such as zero access, will completely block your computer from connecting to the service. In addition, we have seen times when the anti-virus program itself was the culprit and blocked access to Windows update due to the firewall.

In some cases we have seen Malware actually change either your DNS settings or the proxy settings on your system to se3nd your computer to a malicious server instead of the normal servers that your computer would connect to.

In order for Windows update to work correctly, there must be certain services that are running in the background at all times. Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Cryptographic Service, Event Log and Remote Procedure Call all need to be running and set to automatic in the control panel. If these services are damaged in any way, your connection to Windows Update will not happen. In some cases, especially with Windows Vista and up, a complete computer reformat may be needed in order to repair the system and get it up and running again.

This brings us to another subject, backing up, which will be necessary if you do need to reformat the computer. In order to reformat your computer without loosing all your data, you will need a full fresh backup of all your files and documents. If you perform regular backups, re-imaging your system will be a painless experience. Please remember that backing up is one of the most important daily or weekly tasks you need to perform on your computer. Back up a minimum of at least once a week.
